Grandma’s Secret Remedy (嫲嫲秘方) is a T-shirt project in collaboration with Dear Samfu, and inspired by the little wisdoms and things we grew to love in our childhood, introduced to us by our Chinese grandmas and secondary mother figures.
Details
I was fortunate in that I had 2 secondary mother figures in my life, my grandma and my aunt. Along with my mother, they were both instrumental in shaping my views on womanhood.
My grandma (嫲嫲) lived an hour away from us, but she would visit weekly and bring our favorite homemade soy sauce chicken. It’s so memorable to me because it always meant an amazing dinner.
Whenever my mother had to travel for work, my aunt (姨媽) would stay with my brothers and I to make sure we were okay. She also taught my brothers and I how to play mahjong and all the strategies I needed to succeed in the game.
Grandma’s Secret Remedy is an ode to the wisdom and fond memories they have given me.
The Grandma’s Secret Remedy T-shirt is ethically crafted in Jakarta by refugee women. As a sustainable business, Dear Samfu worked with a manufacturing partner that hires and trains marginalized women by providing community support and upskilling opportunities. 10% of proceeds from the sales of the T-shirts will go to Care Corner Singapore’s Senior Services. During the pandemic, Care Corner Seniors Services actively reach out and care for frail and vulnerable seniors who are socially isolated or have limited access to resources in areas of social, financial, medical and housing support.
